Love is YOU
The poetry unit is by far one of my favorite unit’s to work on with my students.
Of course it is originally met with eye rolls, teeth being sucked and necks rolling.
I am okay with this because, “I am not new to this, I am true to this.” LOL! My students HATE the idea of having a poetry unit…..until I host our first in class open mic. Then, from there, we have a blast.
From time to time I participate. I answer the same prompts I assign them. I allowed them to pick a term and fill in the following blanks.
(blank) taste like.
(blank) feels like.
(blank) sounds like.
(blank) smells like.
(blank) looks like.
My students, hopeless romantics, chose, LOVE. I did one in class with them (which I can’t find at the moment) but after thinking through the most recent holiday (Valentines Day) and recent life events, I thought I’d share an updated one.
Love is You

Love, tastes like you feeding me the last bite of your favorite meal.
Taste like, your cologne because I’ve kissed the area in which you applied it on your neck.
Love smell likes, dinner already being prepared because you’ve heard me say I’ve had a long day.
Smells like, Midnight Blue Citrust from White Barn, the one you searched for hours to find because you knew it was my favorite.
Love sounds like, “I apologize” “No, I apologize.” “No, babe, really, I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intent.”
Sounds like, “Babe, get up. You said you wanted to go to the gym.” “Have you eaten today?” “How can I help?” “Babe, I’ll fast with you, concerning it." “You looking good, girl.”
Sounds like, me falling asleep on the phone with you only to wake up hours later and to hear you praying for me. For my health, my purpose and the next day.
Love feels like, sweaty palms and fast heart beats as we unpack and advocate FOR our love languages and try to explain where we are and/have been, missing the mark. (With hearts that WANT to meet the mark).
Feels like, “doing without being asked, but knowing it’s a need.
Love, looks you sitting in my presence. Understanding that I don’t need you say anything but that I do need you to be there. Looks like you dj’ing my favorite songs until my funk of a mood has passed.
Looks like, you demonstrating by first doing, what it looks like, to OUT DO, in honoring one another.
Love is and has always been, you.
I’m so thankful to be love, have loved and to continue experiencing, love.
XoxoxoXO,
Alicia Elizabeth
